Weibo, Weixin… What is “Wei” in Chinese?

You may have heard of some Chinese social software, such as Weibo (微博), WeChat (Weixin, 微信)… Both terms share the character “微” (wēi), which is often translated as “micro”.

In Chinese, Weibo combines the characters Wei and Bo. Wei means micro, Bo is the transliteration of blog. So Weibo means microblogging. Weibo is a social media platform very similar to Twitter in China.

Before the advent of Weibo, Chinese people often posted blogs online to record their lives. With the launch of Weibo, this novel way of publishing content quickly gained popularity. During that time, “micro” (Wei-) gradually began to become synonymous with the new type of social media in China.
